Abstract: Herpes zoster is a skin disease caused by the reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus (VZV)in the posterior root ganglia of spinal nerves or sensory ganglia of cranial nerves. It is associated with a decline in VZV-specific cell-mediated immunity. To boost VZV-specific cell-mediated immunity via immunizing with VZV-targeted vaccines may reduce the incidence and severity of herpes zoster in high-risk populations.Once herpes zoster develops, antivirals and appropriate analgesics should be administrated as early as possible to relieve symptoms and prevent the development of post-herpetic neuralgia.Further research into the mechanisms of T lymphocyte-mediated immunity in herpes zoster may provide a solid theoretical basis for the immunotherapy of herpes zoster.
