Abstract: The resistance of clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to ceftriaxone or cefixime has been increasingly reported all over the world. PenA, mtrR, porBlb and ponA gene are predominate genes associated with decreased susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to cephalosporins. It has been revealed that mosaic-like structure of penicillin-binding protein 2 (PBP2) can confer decreased susceptibility to cefixime in Neisscria gonorrhoeae and may be related to decreased susceptibility to ceftriaxone. There is a confirmed correlation between mutions of mtrR, porBlb and ponA genes and decreased susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhocae to cefixime and ceftriaxone. Also, mosaic alleles of PenA in conjunction with polymorphisms of mtrR, porB1b and ponA genes may contribute to the reduced susceptibility to cefixime and ceftriaxone in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
