Influence of Ti coated by three different surface modifications to titanium alloy on Streptococcus mutans adhesion

Abstract: Objective To compare the effect of three different surface modification on medical Titanium-Alloy(TC4),and to analyze the amount of Streptococcus mutans adhered to the surfaces of the four groups of TC4.Methods Four groups of TC4 specimen were prepared(six specimens for each group).One group was modified using ultrasound rolling surface nanocrystallization.The second group was treated using PulsPlasma(R)-nitriding.The third group was modified using both methods mentioned above,and the fourth group with polished TC4 was control group.Streptococcus mutans were adhered to the four groups.Adhesion period was one hour.Then each specimen was observed with fluorescence microscope and five photos were taken using software NIS-elements F 2.20 and Image-ProPlus 6.0.Results After 1 h's culture,compared with control group (214± 29),the number of Streptococcus mutans attached on the nitriding group (162 ± 27) and nanocrystallization plus nitriding group (45 ± 24) were significantly reduced,whereas no statistical significance was found between nano group (220 ± 30) and control.Conclusions The modification layers on TC4 modified by PulsPlasma(R)-nitriding and nanocrystallization plus nitriding technique are superior to that in control group in antibacterial property.The antibacterial property of surface of nanocrystallized TC4 is not ideal.Among the three modifying technique,nanocrystatlization plus nitriding is the most ideal one.
