Abstract: Objective To investigate the infection of helicobacter pylori (HP) and associated factors in the ship crew. Methods With the overall random sampling method, the ship crew of 238 received a questionnaire and 13C-urea breath test. Results The HP infection rate in the ship crew was 61.8%,which was slightly higher than the average HP infection rate of 59% in the Chinese population, but significantly higher than that of 42% in the Guangtong population.HP infection rate in the ship crew increased with the years of service onboard the ship, and was also directly correlated with such factors as education level, duration of deployment at sea, diet, smoking and symptoms of upper digestive tract in recent days and other factors. Conclusions Due to occupational characteristics, the ship crew was a population at high risk of HP infection.Such active measures as enhancing personal quality, paying attention to food hygiene, improving the living environment, shortening duration of deployment at sea, smoking cessation, etc.could help to decrease risks of HP infection among the ship crew.
