Abstract: Objective To investigate the relationship between functional constipation and psychological factors through psychological tests of the submariners with chronic constipation and to provide basis for the diagnosis and treatment of functional constipation. Methods Twenty - six patients with functional constipation conforming to Rome Ⅲ diagnostic criteria and 30 asymptomatic healthy controls were studied. Life event scale and symptom checklist were used for psychological tests and psychological status was also analyzed. Results In the assessment of life - event scale, the rate of psychological abnormalities for the functional constipation group was higher than that for the control group. In the symptom self - assessment, total score, total average score, number of positive items of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. In addition, somatization, compulsion, depression, anxiety and other factors of the experimental group were also higher than the control. Conclusions Psychological factors played a certain role in the development of constipation. For this reason, when drug treatment was made, it was necessary to give psychological tests and psychological treatment to the submariners with constipation.
