Preparation and antibacterial properties of new silver nanoparticle coating films

Abstract: Objective To prepare silver nanoparticle coated films,and to determine their antibacterial properties. Methods The silver-silicon dioxide films were deposited on the surface of silicon wafer by pulsed laser deposition(PLD). Three groups of film samples were prepared according to the different laser pulse deposition rate.The film samples with the ratios of silver to silica 1:3(Type A),1:1 (Type B)and 3:1(Type C)were included as the study groups,and the simple silicon wafer was included as the control group. The samples in the study groups were physically characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectrometry(EDS)and atomic force microscopy(AFM). The clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were used as the experimental strains for in vitro antibacterial test.Results The contents of the silver nanoparticles in the 3 kinds of prepared samples,Type A,Type B and Type C,were 19.29%,65.32% and 77.18% determined by EDS,respectively.SEM showed that the silver nanoparticles were embedded in the skeleton structure of silica in the samples of study groups, and the structure was clear. AFM showed the 3 kinds of samples,Type A,Type B and Type C with good surface roughness and silver nanoparticle sizes of 10.8,11.9 and 12.9 nm,respectively. The antimicrobial experiment showed that the diameters of the bacteriostatic rings of the 3 kinds of samples,Type A,Type B and Type C,in the medium of Escherichia coli were 11,15 and 16 mm,respectively.The diameters of the bacteriostatic rings of the 3 kinds of samples in the medium of Staphylococcus aureus were 15,16 and 17 mm,respectively. The prepared silver nanoparticles coated films showed antibacterial effect. There was no bacteriostatic ring in the control group. Conclusion The preparation of silver nanoparticles antibacterial films by PLD is simple and easy,and the material has good antibacterial effect.
