Abstract: Objective To investigate the epidemiological features of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infectin in Guangzhou children with acute respiratory tract infections between 2011 and 2013.Methods During the study period,27 116 nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from children with acute respiratory tract infections admitted to our hospital. The samples were screened for RSV by real-time fluorescent PCR (RT-PCR).The 30 positive samples were selected randomly from all RSV positive samples for amplification and sequencing of RSV G gene.Three of the 30 positive samples were randomly selected for whole genomic amplification and sequencing. Results Among 27 116 samples screened,a total of 4 421 were RSV-positive,with the positive rate being 16.30% (4 421/27 116).Phylogenetic analysis of the 30 RSV strains identified 21 of NA1,2 of ON1 and 7 of BA9 genotype. The GenBank accession numbers for G gene obtained from the 27 RSV strains and RSV whole genome sequences obtained from the 3 RSV strains in this study are KM586819-KM586845 and KM517572,KM578843,KM517573.Conclusion RSV was one of the important viruses leading to acute respiratory tract infections amongst children in Guangzhou between 2011 and 2013.NA1 and BA9 were the prevailing RSV A and B genotypes, respectively.
