Abstract: Chinese patent medicines are popular due to their definite clinical efficacy, reliable quality, and good safety. However, Chinese medicine and its preparations are one of the main causes of drug induced liver damage. The hepatotoxic ingredients of Chinese patent medicines and the irrational application of Chinese patent medicines are the two main reasons for their hepatotoxicity. However, there are no systematic studies on the causes, types, and preventive measures for liver injury caused by Chinese patent medicines. This article aims to briefly review the causes and preventive measures of acute and chronic liver injury caused by Chinese patent medicines.
