Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia. As a multifactorial disease, diabetes mellitus is typically linked to energy metabolism. However, the mechanism of diabetes mellitus has not yet been fully elucidated.Recently, many studies focused on the new mechanism of diabetes mellitus in order to develop more effective therapies.Previous studies have shown that gut flora is involved in the development of diabetes mellitus.Gut flora is the largest micro-ecosystem in the human body and is closely related to energy metabolism.Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is usually defined as an overgrowth of bacterial flora inhabiting the small intestine. Many studies demonstrated that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is closely related to the development of diabetes mellitus. In this paper,we discuss the relationship between small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and diabetes mellitus.
