Abstract： Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional bowel disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort and alteration of stool habits.The etiology of IBS remains unclear.Based on Rome Ⅲ criteria,IBS is classified into four subtypes:C-IBS (constipation predominant),D-IBS (diarrhoea predominant),M-IBS (mixed type),and U-IBS (unsubtyped).Until now,there has been not a specific agent for treating all the subtypes on the market.Sesquiterpene lactones are bioactive components of many medicinal plants,exhibiting a variety of biological activities,including anti-tumor,antiinflammatory,analgesic,and antibacterial activities.In this paper,we discuss the biological activities of sesquiterpene lactones in improving IBS symptoms and their application in IBS treatment.
