Abstract: Objective To study the therapeutic effect of superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) anastomosis combining with original encephaloduromyosynangiosis in treating moyamoya disease. Methods 89 direct STA-MCA bypasses combining with encephaloduromyosynangiosis were performed on 73 hemispheres in 49 cases of ischemic-type and 16 cases of hemorrlogic-type moyamoya disease during October 2005 to July 2008 in Huashan Hospital. Results The cerebral blood flow increased immediately after operation. The isehemic symptoms were relieved in all the patients. No rebleeding was found on follow up. Conclusion We named indirect revascularization using temporal muscle (the deep temporal artery) and the dura mater (the middle meningeal artery) as "encephaloduromyosynangiosis (EDMS) ". The combination of STA-MCA bypass with EDMS is a new rational cerebral revascularization in treating moyamoya disease.
