Abstract: Objective To study the characters and growth patterns of cranio-orbital tumors, and to discuss the operation timing and surgical methods for this kind of patients. Methods We performed a retrospective review of the clinical materials of 80 patients who underwent microsurgical operations for cranio-orbital tumors in our department between Jan 2001 and Dec 2007. Then we summarized and described the two growth patterns, three extending pathways of tumors and four microsurgical approaches for the resection of tumors. Results In this series, total tumor resection was achieved in 68 of 80 cases, subtotal resection was performed in 10 cases, and 2 cases obtained part resection. The rate of total resection was 85%. Conclusion Microsurgical resection should be the preferred treatment for cranio-orbital tumors. Postoperative treatment such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy could reduce the recurrence rate for malignant cranio-orbital tumors.
