Abstract: Objective To investigate the expressions of survivin and p-STAT3 in the tumor tissue of brain glioma, their corrlations and the role in the development and progression of brain glioma. Methods Simple two-step immunohistochemical staining was used for the measurement of the expressions of the survivin and p-STAT3 be-tween 62 cases of brain glioma and 10 normals. Results No expressions of the survivin and p-STAT3 were noted in the normal brain tissue, while high expressions of them were done in brain glioma, with the positive rate of 56.45 and 61.29% respectively. There was a markedly significant difference in the expressions of the survivin and p-STAT3 between Kernohan's Grade 3-4 and 1-2, P<0. 05. Of 35 survivin-positive cases, 25(71.43%) were p-STAT3-positive, and the expression of the survivin protein was directly related to that of p-STAT3 (r =0. 38, P =0.003). Conclusion Survivin gene may play the anti-apoptotic function in the turmor tissue of brain glioma through activating the p-STAT3 protein, faciliating the development and progression of the glioma.
