Abstract: Objective To study the sites of lymph node metastasis in mediastinum after radical surgery for esophagus cancer. Methods From 1989 to 1998, 92 patients with mid-thoracic esophageal cancer received radical surgery. The sites of lymph node metastasis in mediastinum were analyzed. Results Seventy-five(85%) of 92 patients developed lymph node metastasis in the mediastinum within 1 year after operation. The sites of lymph node metastasis were located in R 2 region in 46 patients, in regions 7 and 8 in 31, and in region 4L and 4R in 27.Conclusions The lymph node metastasis in the right para-bronchus area is common in those patients with mid-thoracic esophageal cancer after surgery. We suggest that chest CT scan be a routine examination for these patients because the routine roentgenogram and physical examination can not show them.
