Abstract: @@ A cquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)was first recognized in the United States in the Summer of 1981,1,2 when the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the unexplained occurrence of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in 5 cases and Kaposi's sarcoma in 26 cases of previouly healthy homosexual men in Los Angeles and New York. Within months, the disease became recognized in male and female intravenous drug users (IDU) and soon after in recipients of blood or IDV transfusions and in hemophiliacs.3
