Abstract: Objective:To investigate chang es in T helper cell subsets(TH1/TH2) ratio in blood and its potenti alrole in the pathogenesis of asthma. Methods:Venous blood was collected and monouclear cells were isolated by gradient centri fugation.Intracellular immunostaining assay was used to determine the cell expre ssion of interferonγ(IFNγ,TH1) and interleukin 4(IL4,TH2), and then TH1/TH2 ratio wa s calculated. Results:The TH1/TH2 ratio of venous blood significantly decreased both in asthmatic rats (0.5±0.2 vs. 2.7±1.7) and asthmatic patients (0.4±0.3 vs. 2.5±0.8),compared with those in controls (both P <0.01).Conclusions:The imbalance of TH1/TH2 might play animportant role in the development of asthma.
