Abstract： Despite significant progress in medical therapy for ulcerative colitis, surgical intervention is still required in a portion of patients with ulcerative colitis. Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis has been commonly used in western countries, while ileorectal anastomosis may be appropriate in specific scenarios. The surgical decision should be made based upon the clinical situation and sufficient patient consent.
