Abstract: Objective To investigate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose regulation among the elderly population in Bazhong, Sichuan province. Methods Multi-stage random cluster sampling was performed to recruit study subjects aged 60 years or over in Bazhong. Data were collected through questionnaire, blood glucose testing and oral glucose tolerance testing. Results The prevalence of DM in elderly was 10.4%,and was higher in the female,urban elderly,mental worker than in male, rural elderly and physical labourer,respectively. The prevalence of DM was increased along with the family income increasing. The prevalence of IFG was 6.6%, IGT was 22.8% and IFG combined with IGT was 1.9%. Conclusion The situation of prevalence of diabetes mellitus in elderly of Bazhong is still grim. Great measures should be strengthened to enhance the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus.
