Abstract: Objective To analyze myocardial triglyceride (TG) content by use of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy(1H-MRS) in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods Twelve patients with type 2 diabetes and ten healthy adults were selected. The anthropometric features and serum biological markers including fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and lipids were tested. Then myocardial TG content was quantified by 1H-MRS scan of heart. The differences in the above items between diabetic patients and control were determined. Results Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), plasma glucose and TG concentrations were higher in diabetic patients than in control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Myocardial TG content was higher in diabetic patients(0.99±0.46%) than in control group(0.52±0.18%)(P<0.01). Meanwhile, myocardial TG content of diabetic patients was positively correlated with plasma TG level (r=0.818,P<0.01). Conclusions Myocardial TG content can be quantitatively determined by 1H-MRS. Myocardial TG content in patients with T2DM is elevated significantly.
