Abstract: Objective To examine the risk factors for impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and its relationship with cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 3937 adolescents aged 13-18 years. IFG was defined as a fasting glucose of 5.6 to 7.0mmol/L.Height,weight, waist circumference(WC), blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose(FPG),total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) were measured. Results (1)The prevalence of IFG in total population was 3.5% and similar between boys and girls (3.9% vs 3.1%, P=0.177). (2) Odds ratio for two and over cardiovascular risk factors in IFG group was 1.889 times (95%CI 1.125~3.171)versus normal fasting glucose group. (3)The prevalence of family history of diabetes was higher in IFG group(45.6%). Multiple linear regression analysis using FPG as a dependent variable showed that age,WC and TC were significantly independent predictors. Conclusions The prevalence of IFG in adolescents is high. Adolescents with IFG show the clustering of cardiovascular risk factors. Genetical susceptibility, abdominal obesity and dyslipidemia are the main risk factors for adolescents IFG
