Abstract: Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics of the different numbers of metabolic syndrome components-complicating Chinese type 2 diabetes mellitus and their effects on the vascular lesions Methods 4616 type 2 diabetic patients were grouped according to the metabolic abnormalities. The diabetic patients without any other metabolic abnormalities were in group 0. Those with one to six other metabolic abnormalities were divided to group 1, group 2, group 3, group 4, group 5 and group 6.The macrovascular complications and their risk factors were analyzed. Results 3537 patients (76.6%) complicated other 2 and more metabolic abnormalities. The percentage of female patients was increased from group 0 to group 6 (36%, 45%, 48%, 47%,51%,51% and 53%). BMI, waist circumference, waist hip ratio, blood pressure, blood glucose, HOMA-IR, cholesterol, triglyceride and urine albumin excretion rate, and the prevalences of ECG abnormality and non-palpability of dorsalis pedis arterial pulse were increased, and HDL-cholesterol level was decreased significantly. Conclusions About three fourth of Chinese type 2 diabetic patients complicate metabolic syndrome. More female diabetic patients have metabolic syndrome, compared with the male counterparts. Macrovascular diseases are more common in the patients with more metabolic abnormalities.
