Abstract: Objective To study the relationship of adiponectin(ADIPO) with body fat content, fat distribution and insulin sensitivity (IS) in type 2 diabetics Methods Included were 40 cases of type 2 diabetics diagnosed by criteria of WHO (1999), with 16 male cases, 24 female cases, mean age of (55±7) years, mean body mass index (BMI) of (25 0±2 5) kg/m 2, mean diabetes duration of (3±4) years In all patients the routine clinical data were checked up and the variables of fasting plasma glucose(FBG), fasting plasma insulin(FIns) were determined Euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp was performed in 20 patients and tissue glucose metabolic rate(M value) was calculated The plasma levels of ADIPO, TNFα and FFA were also measured Body fat content (Fat) and fat free content (Lean) were determined by DEXA Fat%=Fat/(Fat+Lean) was calculated Of all patients 17 cases were given MRI scan to calculate abdominal visceral fat area(VFA), abdominal subcutaneous fat area(SFA) by computer, and V/S ratio were calculated Results (1)The level of plasma ADIPO was decreased in obese (Ob) type 2 diabetics with increased fat (2)The level of plasma ADIPO was also decreased in type 2 diabetics with increased VFA (3) The level of plasma ADIPO was correlated positively with M value and negatively with TNFα and FFA Conclusions Plasma level of ADIPO is affected by body fat content or fat distribution in type 2 diabetics ADIPO has a positive relationship with IS
