Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between body fat distribution and insulin resistance (IR) in type 2 diabetic patients and compare methods evaluating body fat distribution. Methods 41 type 2 diabetic patients were enrolled. Body fat percentage (BF%) and regional body fat were measured by dual-energy-X-ray-absorptiometry (DEXA). And body composition was measured by: (1) body mass index (BMI), (2) waist circumference, (3) waist to hip ratio (WHR), (4) total body fat (%BF) measured by TANITA Analyzer. LnlAI [Ln (I/fast insulin X glucose)] was used as insulin sensitivity index. And we analyzed the correlation between TANITA Analyzer and DEXA. Results LnlAI in the group of abdominal obesity (waist circumference, larger than 90 cm in male, 80 cm in female)( - 4. 6 ± 0. 6)was significantly lower than that in the non-abdominal obesity group( -4. 2±0. 7). BMI was correlated with LnlAI only in the group of abdominal obesity (r= - 0. 488). In cluster analysis, BMI was grouped with waist circumference and WHR. BF% measured by TANITA Analyzer were highly correlated with that by DEXA(r = 0. 839). Conclusions Severe IR exists in type 2 diabetic patients with abdominal obesity. BMI could be a marker to reflect IR in type 2 diabetic patients. BF% measured by TANITA Analyzer is highly correlated with that by DEXA.
