Abstract: Objective To study the association of gastric motility abnormalities and autonomic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes. Methods Gastric motility of 129 patients with type 2 diabetes were studied by using radionuclide semi liquid gastric emptying test; Cardiovascular autonomic function, amount of residual urine in bladder and peripheral nerve function were also assessed by Ewing method, ultrasonic and neuropathy star, respectively. Results Gastric motility dysfunction was found in 62 02% of diabetic patients. Autonomic neuropathies were distributed diffusely, and became severe with enlonged duration of the disorder. The percentage of neuropathy in patients with gastric motor abnormalities was higher than that in normal gastric motility patients. Conclusion The incidence of normal gastric motor abnormalities and autonomic neuropathy were both increased in type 2 diabetes and both of them were significantly correlated. It is important to study the gastric emptying and other autonomic nerve functions, and to treat these complications in early stage of diabetes.
