Abstract: 8 species of halophytic seeds and 2 species of non-halophytic seeds were treated with the different concentration of NaCl and iso-osmotic PEG. The results showed that NaCl and iso-osmotic PEG had inhibitory effect on the germination of all the seeds, and the inhibitory level of PEG were greater than that of iso-osmotic NaCl. The inhibitory effect of NaCl on the halophytic seeds decreased with the delay of treatment time, but that on nonhalophytic seeds incresed up to the 8 th day, after then did not increased. With the elongation of treatment with 0.6 MPa NaCl, α-amylase activity continually increased, SOD activity change little in the seeds of S. salsa and H. ammodedron, butα-amylase activity reached maximal value on the 8th day, SOD activity decreased significantly in the seeds of T. aestivum and H. vulgare. All the results proved that the osmotic stress, the activity of some key enzymes and continual absorption of ions from environment during germination all affected the germination of halophytic seeds.
