Abstract: With the significant development of the medical education in China, it is very important to establish a national system for accreditation worthy of international recognition to ensure the quality of the medical education programs. In 2008, the official "Chinese Standards in Basic Medical Education-Clinical Medicine" was released by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health, which marks the beginning of the clinical medicine program accreditation in China. Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) was the first to go through the accreditation process using the Chinese standards. In this article, the process of accreditation and its impacts are discussed based on the experience of SUMC. This process should abide strictly by standards in basic medical education in order to identify the deficiencies of medical education programs and to make recommendations to medical schools. Accreditation is one of the most important and effective methods to improve the quality of medical education programs.
