An evaluation for applicable results of PBL in teaching medical physiology for international students

Abstract: Objective To discuss the implementation and effectiveness of PBL in the teaching of meoical physiology for international students.Methods A study was conducted on two classes.The 2005 fall class served as the experimental group while 2005 spring class served as the control group.PBL was adopted in the experimental class,whereas traditional teaching method was adopted in the control class.The students finai examination results and questionnaires were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of PBL in medical physiology.Results There were significant differences between the two groups in the final examination test marks arid passing rate(P<0.05).When the students were asked for their opinions of PBL teaching style and effectiveness.the survey results showed 91.2% of students believed that it will help them build confidence and increase their enthusiasm and interest,87.7% of students believed that it will improve their ability to solve problems.87.7% of students believed that it will enhance the association between the theory and practice.98.2% of students believed that it will strengthen integration between basic medicine and clinical medicine,82.4% of students believed that it will make them need more time to prepare and 84.2% of students gave requirement of real patient or stimulant patient.Conclusions PBL is superior to the traditional method in its promotion of the activity,it can improve students abilities to apply their knowledge and participation in learning,and also help them form team skills.
