Abstract: A geometric shape, which can be mathematically described by elliptical and linear equations, was proposed to represent pear fruit shapes. Then, a formula for estimation of pear fruit surface areawas derived from the equations mentioned above and a new method was established. The dimensional measurements of the new method were easy and rapid and were made only with a vernier calliper. After the transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter, width at the stalk end, recessed depth at the calyx end and length between maximum width and lower extremity of the pear fruit are determined, the pear fruit surface area can be calculated byusing the derived formula. The prediction accuracy of the new method was verified in two cultivars; their prediction errors were 1.86% and 2.52%, respectively. Thus, the new method provided reasonably accurate estimates of pear fruit surface areas.
