Abstract:
Objective To compare the efficacy of 5-aminolevulinic acid-based photodynamic therapy(ALA-PDT) versus CO2 laser for verruca plantaris. Methods A total of 136 patients with verruca plantaris were recruited in this study, and equally divided into two groups to be treated with ALA-PDT and CO2 laser respectively. Results Significant differences were observed in the cure rate (86.8% (59/68) vs.100% (68/68),P < 0.05) and recurrence rate (13.6% (8/59) vs.29.4% (20/68),P < 0.05) between patients treated with ALA-PDT and those with CO2 laser. Conclusions The cure rate is higher in patients treated with CO2 laser than in those with ALA-PDT,while ALA-PDT seems safer with a lower recurrence rate and less pain.Nevertheless, multiple treatment sessions and considerable cost have limited the clinical application of ALA-PDT.
