Abstract: Objective To investigate the expression profiles of three sex hormone receptors including androgen receptor (AR),estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) in primary extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) and their significance. Methods Immunohistochemical methods were used to examine the expressions of androgen receptor, estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor in formalinfixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 30 patients with EMPD.Results Androgen receptor was observed in 19 (63.3%) of the 30 tissue specimens,18 (72%) of the 25 specimens from male patients, and 1 out of the 5 specimens from female patients.Neither estrogen receptor nor progesterone receptor was detected in any of these specimens. Conclusions EMPD is hormone-dependent.Androgens and their receptors may participate in the initiation and progression of primary EMPD.
