Abstract: Objective To investigate the influence of the length of the dental pad on reducing oropharyngeal discomfort of clear headed patients with intubation. Methods Totaled of 20 clear - headed patients with intubation one day in our ICU in the year of 2010 were divided into experimental group, who used 4cm dental pad,and other 24 patients were divided into control group who used 6cm dental pad.The times of discomfort due to dental pad were compared at four periods of time in one day. Results It showed that six cases (30%) appeared uncomfortable symptoms in experiment group, and 15 cases (62.5 % ) in control group. The difference was significant (x2 =20,P <0.05 ). Conclusions Using the 4cm dental pad to fix endotracheal tube can alleviate discomfort of patients with oropharyngeal, enhance thetolerance of awake patients with tracheal intubation.
