Abstract: AIM To evaluate effect of octreotide in rat hepatic ischemicreperfusion injury. METHODS Thirty adult male SD rats were randomly separated into three groups. The rats in group 1 underwent sham operations, and those in group 2 underwent a 90-minute-period of ischemia of the right lateral lobe. The rats in group 3 were given the same treatment as group 2 rats except that 0.5 μg of octreotide acetate subcutaneously every 6 h from 24 h before hepatic resection until sacrifice, group 1 and group 2 received saline solution instead of octreotide as a control. RESULTS Octreotide improved the animals'survival rates from 0 (group 2) to 60% (group 3) (P<0.05) and decreased bilirubin levels [(7.1±1.7) mg.L-1 (group 3) vs (31±0.4) mg.L-1 (group 2), P<0.05]. CONCLUSION Octreotide could be used to treat ischemic reperfusion injury.
