The Chinese Journal of Orthopaedics (CJO) is the most authoritative and earliest academic orthopaedic periodical in China, which is sponsored by the Chinese Medical Association (CMA) and the editorial responsibility is undertaken by Tianjin Hospital. The pioneer publication “Monthly correspondence of Training program in orthopedics” was published by Prof. Fang Xianzhi in 1957 as the internal issue between the orthopaedic doctors, researchers and the trainees. In 1961, the publication was changed to a supplement form in orthopedics of the Tianjin Medical Journal, which was the predecessor of the Chinese Journal of Orthopaedics and the earliest orthopaedic journal in China. Now the Chinese Journal of Orthopaedics has become the most authorative and widest orthopaedic periodical in China.Every issue is a total of 88 pages, monthly published in world wide. The CJO has a broad range of audiences among the domestic orthopaedic surgeons as well as orthopaedic researchers and students. The papers published in this journal consist of the original articles, reports of innovations in peripheral subjects related to orthopaedic surgery, review articles, instructional courses about both orthopaedic theory and clinical practices indicating the recent trend of orthopaedic surgery, the records of clinical pathological conferences, news briefs in technological progress and experiences. Additionally, there are the columns for letters and comments from the readers, selected abstracts from foreign orthopaedic literature and a compilation of the small dictionary of orthopaedic terms published as needed for the Chinese orthopaedic surgeons. A special column is also provided in a rolling form, for the schedule of academic conferences within the Chinese Association of Orthopaedics (CAO), to provide the readers the newest information of the activities of CAO. The CJO has been the academic communicating window for domestic and international orthopaedic doctors. It has close relationship with dozens of international periodicals, for example JBJS(Am), JBJS(Br), Injury, Spine, and indexed by WHO EXTRAMED system, American CA(chemical Abstracts), American Ulrich PD(Ulrich’s Periodical Directory), and Poland IC(Index Copernius). The CJO is one of Chinese Core Journals, and indexed in many databases including Wanfang Data, Chinainfo, Source Journals for China Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations Database (CSTPCD). The impact factor is 1.478 (2006), which is the first in the all Chinese surgical journals. The citation frequency is 3460 (2006), which is the second in the all surgical journals. Since the foundation 28 years ago, the CJO has got lots of prizes.
